Gayoung Lee
Dear You of Yesterday
Two-year performance and returned letters, 10 x 20 cm each, 2020-2022
In March 2020, Lee parted ways with a friend with whom they spent most of their twenties, a friend with whom they had an unnamed relationship. Filtering through years of memories filled with both spoken and unspoken words, Lee begins to write a letter every day. These letters travel backward in time, one day at a time, beginning on the day of the breakup. As this epistolary chronicle rewinds through time, the temporal realms of sender and intended recipient rapidly diverge. Beginning in January 2021, letters were dropped into the mailbox every day, piling up as they were returned to them with an “address unknown” return stamp. The performance was conducted for two years.
