Horizon from the South

Two-channel video, 55min, 2022

In an era marked by COVID-19-induced social distancing and border controls, when the demarcations between nations and individual bodies have been accentuated, Lee embarks on a journey to the southernmost tip of Korea. On the Gapado Island, where they are confined by inclement weather, the artist’s body traces the contours of the island, attempting to make a single brushstroke with the horizon that unfolds before them. This horizon, a boundary and threshold for the body and the gaze, recurs throughout Horizon from the South. With each step of the performer, this horizon, once considered a stable and straight line, shifts, revealing the inherent instability of the seemingly seamless line that conventionally aids in orientation.
